Ba mhaith linn go mbeadh sonraí gach iarscoláire againn chun go mbeidh ar ár gcumas Clár na nImeachtaí, nuair a bheidh sé curtha I gcrích, a chur in iúl do gach éinne ionas go  mbeidh deis acu freastail ar na himeachtaí uile nó cuid díobh.

This web site was created by a group of past pupils, teachers and the De la Salle order who are organising some events around the 80th anniversary of the opening of the Coláiste.

Quite a few of them have been involved with organising class reunions of students of the Coláiste over the years.

On this page you will find the names of those on the organising committee and a short history of Coláiste Iosagáin.

Further pages will discuss the Reunion which is planned for the 23rd and 24th October 2020 (COVID-19 permitting) show photographs of classes and events in the past; give details of the class lists from the Attendance Rolls of various Leaving Certificate year groups. There is a Contacts Page where you can contact us with your details; email and/or mobile numbers. That, of course, is only if you are interested in being involved.  That Contacts Page will also provide a facility where you can provide details of other past students of the Coláiste,if you can remember or are still in contact with them.

We would like to reach as many past pupils as possible so we can publicise the programme of events when this is finalised and give everybody a chance to attend some or all of the events.

SCÉAL CHOLÁISTE ÍOSAGÁIN

Tagann ainm Coláiste Íosagáin ó scéal a scríobh Pádraig Mac Phiarais faoin teideal ‘Iosagán’. I mBaile Mhúirne I nGaeltacht Mhúscraí I gCo. Chorcaí atá sé suite.  Níor gnáth scoil chónaithe a bhí ann,  tógadh é,  go luath taréis Saoirse na tíre a bhaint amach,  d’aon turas mar Choláiste Réamhullmhúcháin do Bhunmhúinteoirí.  Roghnaíodh ceantar Ghaeltachta chun go mbeadh deis ag na mic léinn labhairt le muintir na háite ina dteanga dhúchais.

Oifig na nOibreacha Poiblí a bhí I mbun na tógála.  Ba iad Harry Olberry agus T.J. Byrne na hailtirí agus bhí Martin J. Burke freagrach as an tarna céim den obair.  Bhí stailc ann le linn na tógála – tógáil a lean ar feadh 8 mbliana.   Solátharaíodh na hábhair tógála go léir go háitiúil.   Ba mhór é tionchar an Choláiste ar an bpobal áitiúil,  chuir sé fostaíocht ar fáil le linn na tógála agus ar feadh na mblianta ina dhiaidh sin.

Le cead solúnta an Easpaig De Róiste,  Cluain Umha, bunaíodh Comhthionóil Bráthaire De La Salle I mBaile Mhúirne ar an 4ú lá d’Iúil 1940.   Ar an gcéad Comhthionól sin bhí na Bráthaire Seosamh Ó hAirtnéide,  Uachtarán,  Peadar Ó Loingsigh,  Raphael Mac Siomóin agus Anastás Ó Ceallaigh. Bhí beirt ollamh tuata ar an bhfoireann teagaisc – Dónal Caomhánach agus Eighneachán Ó Flannacháin.   Ar an 3ú lá de Mhéan Fómhair Cláraíodh 53 mac léinn.

Taréis bunú an tSaoir Stáit I 1922 ba iad na Coláistí Réamhullmhúcháin, acadaimh go bunúsach do ábhair oidí,  an t-athrú ba shuantasaí I gcúrsaí oideachais.   Dar le hEarnán de Blaghd dob é aidhm agus feidhm na gColáistí “meanma an naisiúin a neartú trí an áit ba dhual dóibh a thabhairt do theanga,  do stair,  do cheól agus do thraidisiún na hÉireann I scoileanna na tíre.” Thar tríocha éigin bliain,  ó 1927 go dtí 1961,  ba iad na Coláistí Réamhullmhúcháin an fhoinse ba mhó a chuir ar fáil múinteoirí do na Scoileanna  Náisiúnta.   Chabhraigh bunú na gColáistí seo go mór chun fadhb an ghanntanais de ábhair mhúinteoirí, a bhí líofa sa Ghaeilge, a réiteach. Coláistí cónaithe den dara leibhéal a bhí iontu-sa ina bhféadfadh ábhair múinteoirí,  ní hamháin oideachas den chéad scoth a fháil ach na buntáistí a ghabhann le saol scoile I gcomhluadar Gaelach a ghnóthú chomh maith.  I ngach Coláiste díobh so coiméadadh leath de na hionaid do iarrathóirí a fuair 85% nó níos mó I scrúdú béil san scrúdú iontrála agus coiméadadh 50% díobh san arís do iarrathóirí a raibh Gaeilge ón gcliabhán acu.  Bhí na Coláistí seo bunaithe agus maoinithe ag an Stáit agus faoi stiúrú Ord Caitiliceach nó Údaráis Eaglais na hÉireann.

Ó lá a oscailte I 1940 go dtí 1960 bhí Coláiste Íosagáin á riaradh,  thar cheann an Rialtais,  ag na Bráithre De La Salle, mar Choláiste Réamhullmhúcháin amháin. Taréis pas a fháil I Scrúdú na hArd-Teistiméireachta d’imigh na mic léinn go léir ar aghaidh go dtí an Coláiste Oiliúna I nDroim Conrach.  Sa bhliain 1961 beartaíodh ar deireadh a chur leis na Coláistí Réamhullmhúcháin agus torthaí na hArd-Teistiméireachta a  úsáid feasta mar shlat tomhais le háit a ghnóthú I gColáiste Oiliúna.  I Meitheamh 1964 tháinig deireadh le Coláiste Íosagáin mar Choláiste Réamhullmhúcháin agus é ina gnáth mhéan-scoil chuir Ord De La Salle fáilte ann roimh na céad daltaí I Méan Fómhair 1961.  As seo amach bhí idir bhuachaillí cónaithe agus bhuachaillí lae ag freastail ar an gColáiste.  Cé gur claraíodh furmhór na ndaltaí a tháinig isteach ar an ocáid seo I mbliain a 1 agus a 2 bhí dornán beag a chuaigh iseach insna ranganna réamh-ullmhúcáin. Múineadh an Béarla,  fiú,  tré mheán na Gaeilge.

Cé nár Coláiste Réamhullmhúcháin a bhí ann taréis 1964 bhí sé de nós ar feadh na mblianta I measc alán de na hiarrthóirí Ard-Teistiméireachta aghaidh a thabhairt ar Choláiste Phádraig,Droim Conrach agus cáiliú mar bhun-mhúinteoirí.

Sa bhliain 1974 fáiltíodh  roimh chailiní áitiúla mar dhaltaí lae sa Choláiste don chéad uair. Ar feadh roinnt blianta bhí an Coláiste ina Choláiste Samhraidh le linn míonna an tSamhraidh agus chruinnigh daltaí ann as gach cearn d’fhonn feabhas a chur ar a gcumas labhartha na teanga.

Short history Coláiste Iosagáin

The ‘Coláiste’, named after a story by Patrick Pearse, was located in Ballyvourney, Co. Cork, part of the Muskerry Gaeltacht.  It was an unusual boarding school, purpose-built by the Office of Public Works and established soon after Independence in a Gaeltacht area.  The reason for this was to enable the students to have interaction with the local Irish speaking community. The architects were Harry Alberry and T.J. Byrne.  Martin J. Burke was responsible for the second phase of works. There was a strike during the building of the college, which took 8 years to complete.   All of the materials used in the building were locally sourced. The ‘Coláiste’ had a great impact on the local community, both during the building, and subsequently through the employment provided.

On the 4th of July 1940 the Ballyvourney Community of the De La Salle Brothers was opened with the formal sanction of Bishop Roche of Cloyne. The pioneer Community consisted of Brothers Joseph Hartnett Director, Peter Lynch, Raphael Fitzsimons and Anastasias Kelly. On the 3rd of September 53 students were enrolled. The two lay professors on the staff were Donal Kavanagh and Ignatius Flanagan.

Preparatory Colleges, essentially academies for future teachers, were the most significant change in education following the foundation of the Irish Free State in 1922.  At their core was the ideal of Ernest de Blythe (Ernán de Blaghd) – “the strengthening of the national fibre by giving the language, history, music and tradition of Ireland their natural place in Irish schools”.  For over thirty years from 1927 to 1961, Preparatory Colleges were the major recruitment source for Primary School teachers. The establishment of Preparatory Colleges was a significant step towards remedying the shortage of student teachers with a fluent knowledge of Irish. These colleges were residential, second level colleges in which candidates for a teaching career would get a thoroughly sound secondary education, combined with the advantages of a collective school life lived in an atmosphere of Gaelic speech and tradition.  Half the vacancies in each college were to be reserved for candidates who obtained not less than 85% for Oral Irish at the entrance test and 50% of these in turn were reserved for native speakers of Irish. These colleges were established and funded by the State and placed under the control of Catholic Religious Orders or the Church of Ireland authorities.

From its opening in 1940 until 1961, Coláiste Iosagáin was run by the De La Salle Brothers, on behalf of the Government, exclusively as a Preparatory College. It hosted the top students from all over Ireland, who would go on to become the nation’s finest teachers.  The students spent 4 years in the Coláiste, undertaking the Intermediate Certificate exam at the end of their 2nd year, and the Leaving Certificate exam two years later.  All of the students automatically graduated to the Teacher Training College in Drumcondra, provided they passed the Leaving Cert.  In 1961 a decision was made to dispense with Preparatory Colleges, and to use the Leaving Certificate as the basis for entry to Teacher Training College.   Between September of 1961 and June of 1964 the last of the Preparatory Students worked their way through the Secondary School system.  The De La Salle Order, took its initial intake of non-preparatory students in September 1961.  These included local day pupils in addition to boarders.  While the bulk of this intake comprised of 1st and 2nd year students, there were also some students who joined the Preparatory Classes.  There was no distinction between the Preparatory and Fee Paying students.  The same rules applied to all.  The ethos of speaking Irish as a mandatory requirement was continued.  Even English as a subject was taught through Irish!

Although Coláiste Iosagáin was no longer a Preparatory school after 1964, the “Teacher” ethos remained, and “St Pats” in Drumcondra was for many years the top target for the Leaving Cert candidates.

In 1974, in a major development local female students were admitted for the first time.

Over the years Iosagáin also functioned as a Colaiste an tSamhraidh during the summer months; taking in students from all over Ireland who wished to improve their Irish language capability.

COLÁISTE ÍOSAGÁIN IDIR 1989 AGUS 2020

Dúnadh doirse an Choláiste I 1989.   Cheannaigh Údarás na Gaeltachta é I 1998 ar suim a bhí ós chionn £500,000.  Deineadh iarrachtaí go minic, ach in aisce, thar na blianta ar an bhfoirgneamh a fhoirbeart. Le déanaí ba mhór an spreagadh é do Údarás na Gaeltachta maoiniú de €180,000 ón gCiste Tuaithe Athnuachana agus Forbartha chun staidéar féideartachta a dhéanamh a aimseodh conas a fhéadfaí an foirgneamh a úsáid ar son leas an phobail áitiúil.  Ceadaíodh €2.7 M, anuraidh de mhaoiniú Rialtais, chun mol forbartha áitiúil a chur chinn sa Choláiste.  Tá an maoiniú á sholathrú tríd an gCiste  Forbartha Áitiúil de chuid Fiontar Éireann.  Tá iarratas Pleanála á lorg agus táthar ag súil le é a bheith faighte faoi Mheitheamh 2020. Síos trí na blianta agus ó fuair an tUdarás ceannas ar  an suíomh tá Estát Tionscail ar an bpáirc imeartha agus suas le 13 gnó suite ann.

Sa bhliain 2003 deineadh an scannán “Song for a Raggy Boy”I bhfoirgneamh an Choláiste agus sa talamh mághuaird.  Dráma stairiúil is ea é atá bunaithe ar an leabhar den ainm chéanna scríte ag Patrick Galvin.  Dob é Aiden Quinn an príomh aisteoir agus dob í Aisling Walsh an stiúrthóir.

Coláiste Iosagáin between 1989 and 2020

The Coláiste closed in 1989 and was bought by Údarás na Gaeltachta in 1998 for over £500,000. Many attempts were made over the following years to develop the building but to no avail.

However, recently funding of €180,000 from the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund was seen as a first step in helping Údarás na Gaeltachta to carry out feasibility studies as to how the building could be utilized for the benefit of the local community. Last year  €2.7m of Government funding for the development of a regional development hub at Coláiste Íosagáin was  approved. The funding is being provided through the Enterprise Ireland Regional Enterprise Development Fund. Planning has been applied for and will hopefully be granted in June of 2020.

Over the years since the acquisition of the site by Údarás na Gaeltachta, an industrial estate has been created in the former playing field where up to 13 enterprises of scale are located. In addition the local GAA club have developed a magnificent club house and grounds.

Song for a Raggy Boy  is  2003 Irish historical drama film directed by Aisling Walsh. It is based on the book of the same name by Patrick Galvin staring Aidan Quinn was filmed in the building  and grounds of the Coláiste.
